Auggie's First Christmas

So, it's almost New Years and we are just now getting a chance to post photos of Auggie's first Christmas. We feel absolutely blessed to have been given a wonderful, healthy little one this year. He is truly the best present we've ever received.

Auggie's Christmas day was an eventful one beginning with gift giving in the morning. We thank everyone for all the wonderful gifts. We are touched by your generosity, creativity, and thoughtfulness.

Lola, Auggie, and his parents then took a stroll in the park. It would have been lovely were it not for the frigid cold and brisk wind. Auggie's Momma complained loud enough that the clan conceded and headed back to the car. Brrrrrr....

Having just watched the movie Julie & Julia, the gang was inspired to cook a Christmas meal a la Julila Child. For dinner that night we had Supreme Volaille (butter poached chicken breasts with a lemon cream sauce), Chou-fleur avec sauce au cari (Cauliflower with a light curry cream sauce), and Pomme de Terre Dauphinoise (Scalloped potatoes). Bon Appetit!

Overall, it was a lovely day spent relaxing in front of the Christmas tree and enjoying the Schmoodles. This family is lucky to have such a wonderfully supportive and loving community of family and friends. Wishing you all the love this world has in store for you in 2010!

Auggie's Second Week

We are at Auggie's Day 14, and here are some of the major milestones he hit along the way:

Pediatrician Visit #1

Just when you think you have it all under control...a day like this one happens. So, Scott and I busied ourselves preparing for Auggie's first visit to the pediatrician on Day 6. We packed the diaper bag full of clean diapers (like 15 extra diapers), vaseline, baby wipes, swaddling blankets, hand sanitizers (yes...we had multiple kinds), and the camera. Then, we plopped our little boy in his car seat and set off to see the doctor.

At the doctor's office we were greeted by Alicia, the grumpy pediatric nurse, who asked us to strip down Auggie to a clean diaper. Now, before I go on, I should note that this request is mean for two reasons:

1) It is bleeding cold in that office
2) Who wants to sit around in their underwear and be poked an prodded?

So, as Scott pulled Auggie out of the car seat, I heard Scott gasp "Oh crap". And, quite literally, that it was. Auggie had his first blow out, and there was poop running all the way down his cute little sleeper outfit. Now, I ask you, what was the one thing that Auggie's Momma and Pappa forgot to pack? An extra outfit. That's right. 15 diapers...no extra outfit.

Needless to say, we whipped out the baby wipes and frantically cleaned him up. And, just as we finished with the poop decontamination, Auggie busted out a glorious golden fountain. He managed to hit Momma, Poppa, the wall, the examination table, and of course, himself. It was awesome.

Thankfully, we have a wonderful pediatrician who gazed upon our haggard faces with kindness. The examination proceeded smoothly from that point. We are happy to report that our Auggie is happy and healthy, weighing in at 7lbs 13ozs. Only 5 more ounces to go until he's back up to birth weight.

The Tita Annie
On Day 7, Auggie met his Tita Annie. In addition to keeping the Momma sane, Tita Annie helped the Lola in the kitchen, did laundry, and kept Auggie smothered with love and affection. We owe the Tita Annie a debt of gratitude for doing such a fantastic job documenting events for us and keeping the Facebook community up to date. Tita Annie returned to Arizona on Day 12, and Auggie and family miss her dearly.

Bye Bye Umbilical Cord
On Day 10 Auggie's umbilical cord fell off. Good thing too, as it was starting to smell. Ick. Although we opted not to save it for his baby book we did document the event in photos (before chucking the cord into the compost bin). We chose not to post the images because the rotten umbilical looks as bad as it smelled. Tee hee hee.

First Bath
On Day 11 we gave Auggie his first official bath in preparation for his second photoshoot. He really loved the warm water and massage. It had a powerful calming effect, so we've added this to our arsenal of tools to calm baby.

Second Professional Photoshoot
Our friend Jenny is a professional photographer (and an awesome poker player). She graciously offered to take some photos of the little Schmoo for her website. So, on Day 11 Auggie had his second professional photoshoot. What a ham.

Overall, he seemed to enjoy lolling around on the heated blankets in his birthday suit. He was a bit finicky when we tried to pose him. Guess this little one knows what he wants. :) Here is a photo that Lola Evelyn took during the photoshoot. We can't wait to see Jenny's.

Pediatrician Visit #2
On Day 13 we had our second visit with the pediatrician. Fortunately, this one proceeded without bowel movements. He is back up to birth weight and gaining steadily. According to the pediatrician, his color is great and he is one beautiful healthy boy (unsure whether he says this to all of his patients). We are so proud of our little man.

So, that's all the Auggie news we have for now. Sorry for delaying this update, we've been a bit shell shocked. :)

The BellaBaby Photoshoot

This post is for all of you who have been asking for more photos of the proud papa. These photos are the result of the BellaBaby Photography Photoshoot we had done at the hospital on Auggie's second day of life outside the womb. The photos are a gift from Auggie's Lola that we will appreciate for years to come.

And, this is some footage of Auggie during the photoshoot. So patient. He's a natural. :)

Five Days Later

Auggie returned home from the hospital Saturday evening after a rather stress-filled day. (It is a long story that I will likely elaborate further upon later.) Thankfully Oma and Granda prepared the house so it was ready for us when we arrived. Lola prepared a terrific dinner including chicken adobo, a gourmet veggie omelet and organic greens. It was Auggie's first opportunity to smell good food.

Leslie enjoying her new little boy

Oma Trudeau with Auggie

We feel that Auggie has taken a liking to his new home for several reasons: (1) it isn't quite as loud as the hospital and doctors and nurses aren't regularly probing him or administering invasive procedures (e.g., MRI [!]); (2) there are a number of fascinating hairy creatures roaming about; and (3) there are lots of toys. This is not to say that Auggie has not had some fussy periods. He did not sleep very well Saturday evening due to some gastrointestinal discomfort. Leslie and I attempted to calm him, but it was Lola who ultimately was able to ease his crying. On Sunday, we purchased a mechanical swing that he appears to be thoroughly enjoying (thanks Craigslist!). Lola also made some Chinese medicine soup for Leslie on Sunday which also appears to have calmed down the little guy.

It's hard to believe that Auggie is already five days old. We look forward to your meeting him! Check out the following slideshow for more recent images.

Introducing Langston August Smith (aka Schmoodles)

Yes, we have finally decided on a proper name for the Schmoodles; Langston August Smith. Of course, it'll be difficult for him to shake Schmoodle. We spent some quality time with Langston ("Auggie" for short) during his first day post utero. For instance, we: changed diapers soiled with meconium stools (which has the consistency of tar--in fact, there must be some industrial use for this substance); watched him attempt to latch on to his new food source (sometimes successfully); recovered from invasive abdominal surgery and engaged in lots of cuddling. We find Langston to be quite an extraordinary little guy.

Thanks to all of you who provided much needed support throughout Langston's journey to the outside world and all of the terrific comments posted here on the blog and other social media sites. Here is a sample of photos that document our first day together.

Schmoodles Arrival

Well the birth didn't necessarily go as planned in that Dr. Mills was concerned about dramatic fluctuations in Schmoodles' heart rate, an indicator of fetal distress. Because of this, the doctor ultimately recommended a c-section at about 10:30pm Wednesday night and Schmoodles was delivered a half hour later in the operating room (8lb 2oz; 20inch)--and he's pretty darn cute(!). The cause of fetal distress was a coiled umbilical cord around Schmoodles' neck (which is considered good luck among some Chinese traditions). Both Leslie and Schmoodles are recovering well but are extremely tired right now. In fact, we haven't even had time to select his formal name. But here are some early photos of Leslie and the unnamed person in our postpartum room. Love everyone very much and we'll be in touch shortly.

Sincerely,
Scott, Leslie and Schmoodles

Live From Schmoodles' Delivery Room

It's 9 December at about 17:45 and Leslie is 10cm dilated and ready to begin the adrenaline inducing second stage of labor (i.e., delivery of Schmoodles). Leslie began laboring at 02:30 this morning (while I slept nearby). At 08:37 Dr. Newman burst the amniotic sac and after a few hours of severe nausea and roaming about the maternity wing, Leslie had the anesthesiologist administer an epidural. She coasted for several hours after that as contractions intensified and Schmoodles dropped (like the snow which has also dropped here in the north country over the past several hours--our first big storm of the year). Leslie now has bragging rights over The Momma who labored a mere 13 hours before delivering Leslie. Both the nurse and doctor have felt the Schmoodles' head and said that he has a lot of hair (for his sake, I hope it stays with him throughout his 30s). Now it's push time with The Momma and Scott cheer-leading. Anne appears to be in the best position to win the Schmoodles Challenge with her guess of 9 December @ 18:14 pm (Mountain Time [Phoenix] which is 19:14 pm Central Time [Illinois]). Anne edged out Deb (sis) and Annand (brother from another mother) by a few hours. Stand by for more news soon including the unveiling of Schmoodles' formal name (hint: begins with "Sch").

The Schmoodles 37 Weeks

The Schmoodles has been growing exponentially over the last few weeks. He has been super active in utero lately. He is currently head down, as he has been for a few months now. He does appear to favor lying on my left side and kicking the right. This makes it convenient, as it helps us identify little heels or fists as they protrude from my belly.

View Photos of the Schmoodles at 37 Weeks

The Schmoodles also likes to show off for his daddy. He responds to the sound of Scott's voice in the late evenings and early mornings by rolling around and showing off his own breakdancing moves. Boy-o-boy is this Momma ever gonna have fun with her boys!

The Nursery

As you may recall from our earlier posts, we chose a transportation theme for the nursery. We worked off the color scheme in the bedding we chose in an attempt to create a bright and lively habitat for our little Schmoodles.

View Photos of the Nursery

We have truly enjoyed piecing together all the bits and pieces, painting and arranging. We look forward to creating some artwork for the walls and making this an active and creative space for the little monkey. Thank you to everyone for your input and contributions to this process. We can't wait to share it with you!

The Schmoodles Challenge

Leslie and I are stressing a bit as Schmoodles' arrival quickly approaches. Schmoodles is moving around a lot and Leslie feels he is "getting into position". We still have a long list of things to do including choosing a name, etc. but no worries.

Now for you...We set up a game on expectnet.com so that you can join us in the excitement and anticipation of Schmoodles' big day. Please participate by entering your guess concerning his weight, length, birth date and birth time. The winner will receive the first phone call direct from the delivery room (if that is possible) and some other undisclosed gift. We'll give you a hint; his estimated day of arrival is 7 December 2009.

Below are the instructions for submitting your guess.

1. Navigate to Expect.net http://www.expectnet.com/game.php
2. In the "Jump to a new game" dialog box (or under "Invited guests") enter the name game type in "Schmoodles"
3. Then, click the "Enter a guess"

Good luck!

Schmoodles 34 Weeks

The big day is drawing closer. We visited the ultrasound tech today for the fourth time. Schmoodles is doing well. His kidneys are within the normal range now. Further, he's already an estimated 5lbs 10oz and growing at a rate of about a half pound per week; so it appears that he is eating well. His heartbeat was 141bps which is also normal.

In addition to taking measurements, the tech was kind enough to snap some nice head shots of the Schmoodles. He has a plump little face now. He has Leslie's nose and my (upper) lip. Here are some more photos.

We were able to watch him as he moved around his little home. He seems to be quite content in there. He lifted his foot to his face and for a brief moment appeared to sit in a full lotus position. It won't be long now. Thanks for tuning in!

Fall Comes Early to the Midwest

The cold weather came early this year, and we've had lows in the 50's all week. We've even had frost overnight, which means that we had to pull in all the lovely tomatoes that remained on the vine. What you see in this picture are the fruits of Scott's hard labor all summer to breed the perfect heirloom tomato.

[View the tomatoes]

The gourds and pumpkins in the photo came from Kuipers Farm, which we visited last weekend for Elliot Kroyer's birthday. Despite the rain, mud, and cold weather, we all enjoyed watching Owen polishing the pumpkins before placing them in the wagon for Elliot to wheel around.

The biggest bump in these photos is our rapidly growing baby boy. He's getting bigger every day and is rapidly filling my belly. His movements have changed from kicks to more of a shuffling movement in my belly. He's even passed the stage of doing benchpresses against my rib cage. I'm guessing that means he's getting too big to fully stretch out his little legs. Over the next few weeks he'll double in weight, but only grow another few inches in length. We just can't wait to meet him.

The Schmoodles First Political Rally

How did The Schmoodles happen upon his first political rally? Well, it all started the weekend following The Schmoodle's baby shower. We ventured out to Rockford, IL to share the morning with Althea, who had stayed the week to visit with extended family. We had a lovely lunch at the Anderson Japanese Gardens, apparently the largest Japanese Gardens in the country. Highly recommended. Good food, great company, and a very relaxing stroll through the waterfalls and a beautiful environment.

[View the Anderson Japanese Gardens]

After we dropped Althea off to catch her plane, Scott and I decided to drop in on a local Rockford NAACP rally that was being held in honor of a young man, unarmed man who had been shot and killed by local police in a nearby church a couple of weeks before. The newspaper stated that the Reverend Jesse Jackson was set to speak at this march, and it was fortuitous timing to get to partake in such an activity.

So, we made our way down to downtown Rockford and fell into step only a few rows behind the Reverend Jesse Jackson and fellow protesters in the march. The Reverend Jesse Jackson gave a short talk that focused on the need for justice, regardless of race matters. He encouraged Rockford citizens to get registered to vote, to be known as leaders in their community, to demand that their public servants reflect the same racial diversity as their community, and to stimulate their economy or ask for assistance in doing so. Overall, it was a balanced and inspired talk. We were awed by the event and the gravity of our proximity to one of the great social justice leaders of our time.

Along the way, we were asked to volunteer to lead NAACP marches/activities in the Geneva area, so we can look forward to sharing more of these experiences with The Schmoodles as he grows older.

The Schmoodles Heartbeat

We found ourselves growing impatient during the long weeks between doctor's visits, waiting to hear The Schmoodles heartbeat and know that he is doing well. So, in order to keep an ear on our little one we got ourselves a fetal doppler. The doppler allows us to hear his heartbeat, hiccups, and movements while he's still in Leslie's belly.

At night, before bedtime, we usually spend some time talking to The Schmoodles, singing "Sur Le Pont D'Avignon", or reading him a Dr. Seuss book. So, that's when we sometimes check in on him with the doppler.

Over the length of his gestation, his heartbeat gradually slows. When he was just a tiny one, his heartbeat was around 177 beats/minute. Now it is down around 144 beats/minute. We find it soothing to listen to him, so we thought we would share it with you too.

The Schmoodles Baby Shower

Tuesday:
Sue and Ron arrived in the morning and immediately began work on beautifying the back stoop. They worked diligently to remove the mold, grime and old paint in preparation for the makeover.

Later that night we walked to Gratto, an Italian Tapas Bar in downtown Geneva that we had wanted to try for a long time. We sat on the patio and ate dinner as the sun set. Aside from the grumpy waiter, the atmosphere was terrific and the food was delicious. Overall, it was a terrific way to kick off preparations for Schmoodles' baby shower.

Wednesday:
Scott and Sue picked out a new red paint for the stoop at the local hardware. Sue and Ron managed to apply one coat of paint before taking the Metra into Chicago where they walked up Michigan Avenue, ate at Pizzeria Uno's and enjoyed an evening architecture tour by boat that was replete with fireworks. Overall, it was a very productive day.

Thursday:
Sue and Ron applied a second coat of paint to the stoop before directing their energy to the backyard. They dug up and pruned several trees and readied the yard for the shower by pulling weeds, clearing brush, raking detritus, and making our yard habitable for guests.
In the afternoon, the four of us met up at The Moveable Feast for lunch and then wandered around the neighborhoods before Scott and Leslie returned to work.

For dinner that evening, we made tostadas at home and played a rousing game of "Ticket to Ride". Scott won...but only by a little bit. Sue presented the family with a very "sweet" narrative of the parental joys that await us. Overall, Sue and Ron worked miracles...and we are very grateful!

Friday:
The end of the 'first shift' on shower duty was marked by the departure of Sue and Ron Friday morning. In anticipation of their big sailboat race on Saturday, they headed back to the lake house. We really truly appreciate all their hard work over the week, and the back stoop looks stoop-endous! We love you guys...THANK YOU!

By 6:30pm, the second shift began to arrive from Arizona, Texas, Utah, and Wisconsin. Anne, Kathryn and Joey arrived first...followed by Lorelei and Denise a couple hours later. We returned to Gratto for another dinner served by our same grumpy waiter. It appears that the that the food was worth the sacrifice. :)

Our valiant efforts to get a game of Puerto Rico going was cut short only by a sage reminder from Joey that the gang had not yet checked into their hotel and ran the risk of losing their reservation. Overall, it was a lovely evening with our best of friends.

Saturday:
We kicked off Saturday morning with a large, cholesterol filled breakfast of eggs, bacon, fried potatoes, and crepes filled with raspberry compote and whipped cream! With full bellies, we meandered through the streets of Geneva to downtown (Lorelei and Kathryn, Denise and Anne). There, we took in the yarn shop (i.e., Wool and Company) and a second-hand baby store. For lunch we had yummy salads at The Moveable Feast (yes...we are creatures of habit). We ended the afternoon with ice cream at Grahams and made our way back home for dinner.

For dinner we made veggie, Mexican, and pesto pizzas using fresh herbs and tomatoes from the garden. We finally got in a game of Puerto Rico. Scott and Joey won...but only by a few points. Overall, it was a fun-filled lazy day in Geneva.

Sunday:
The big day started with an early morning drive to O'Hare to pick up of Althea who forwent an evening of sleep to be here with us. In an effort to avoid a big morning clean up at home; we ate breakfast at Egg Harbor Cafe (Lorelei and Denise, Joey and Kathryn, Althea and Anne, and Scott). The group broke into two groups to kick off "Operation House Tidying" and "Operation Memory Journal", two projects that resulted in a wonderfully decorated house with fun games to entertain the friends and neighbors who attended the shower.

Our food arrived early and in quantities enough to feed five times the numbers of guests. We laid out the food, and headed outside with our guests to enjoy the beautiful weather. Day Jah enjoyed an afternoon with Julie's boys, playing ball and snuggling. Scott, Jay and Harold played basketball.

We all enjoyed Julie's wonderfully decorated cupcakes, and then headed inside to be showered with gifts. Creativity, thoughtfulness, sensitivity, and charm were expressed in the items we received. The Schmoodles has hours of fun and dress up awaiting him!

And, after months of waiting we were finally clued into Stacey's big surprise...a beautifully crafted custom quilt built from love letters to the Schmoodles and family. Stacey did a wonderful job both coordinating and assembling the quilt quarters built by our friends and family members from the raw materials she had distributed. Each square reminds us of the friends and family who bring light into the world and make us who we are. Leslie cried for a half hour...and still cries when she thinks about it. Thank you Stacey, and thank you to all who contributed! :)

At this point we have to take pause and note that there is really no way to effectively convey how completely touched and grateful we are for ALL the wonderful gifts that we received...so we hope you'll forgive us this fault. We will reserve more sappiness for the thank you notes. Overall, we were awed by the love we felt this day.

Monday:
This morning's breakfast was another fried food extravaganza, filled with potato pancakes, bacon, and fruity crepes. In order to burn through those extra calories, we all ventured on another walk through Wheeler Park and the surrounding neighborhoods.

This day was overcast with a touch of sadness as we knew most everyone would be returning home. When the time came, there were hugs and tears. Once the suitcases hit the car, Day Jah's desire to keep the gang together took over. He jumped in the car and refused to leave. Smart dog. We've trained him well.

We are grateful that Lorelei, Joey, Denise, Anne, and Kathryn all made their way home safely. That evening, Althea, Scott, and Leslie enjoyed gelato at Grahams 318 and then played Ticket to Ride. Scott lost this time...by a lot. Overall, this day reminded us of how grateful we are for the love and generosity that surrounds us.

Thank you to everyone for making this event very special! The Schmoodles is one lucky kid.

Schmoodles 22 Weeks

We had our 22 week ultrasound, which gave us the opportunity to peek in on our little one. After a little searching, we were informed that we are having a baby boy! He was very active during the procedure, kicking and boxing at the intrusions of the ultrasound wand. At one point he even had his legs fully extended over his head, so we better get him started in yoga early. :)

Overall, things looked good. We got several views of the heart, kidneys, stomach, and limbs. He had the hiccups, so we got to watch his little diaphram jump up an down. So cute.

Unfortunately, when it came to getting photos of his face, he got really shy and buried his little head in the placenta and brought his hands up over his face. So, there is one shot in the bunch that shows a partial view of his face. I think he looks just like Scott as a baby. Tee hee hee.

Despite having a full stomach, the Schmoodles continued to swallow amniotic fluid. That means we got to see him make this face alot (minus the drool).

Boy-o-boy, are we ever very excited to meet him face to face.

Photos of the Garden

We thought we would share some photos of our little garden. We planted the herbs and tomatoes in late spring, however with all the cool weather this summer we have been harboring fears that they would not grow. Needless to say, we were very pleasantly surprised upon our return from Toronto to see significant growth spurts in all the plants. Does anyone have any suggestions of what to do with Lemon Verbena?

Thoughts on Schmoodle's Nursery

I've received a number of questions about the theme and colors for the nursery, so I thought I would share my most recent thoughts on the matter.

Style: We are gravitating towards a kind of mod, mid-century feel for the nursery - clean lines, shilouettes, and primary colors.

Colors: The walls in the nursery will be the same green as our bedroom walls. It's a cheery green color that reminds of fresh spring growth. The furniture we settled on is a dark Espresso brown color.

Bedding: The bedding color has the same green and brown as the walls and furniture, but also orange, grey, teal, and light blue. It's a transportation theme, which I think is a fitting tribute to one of daddy's passions.

Wall Decor: Stacey directed us to the coolest website for wall stencils: http://www.whatisblik.com/. We loved them, and I think the trees by Bodalee will look cool in the Schmoodle's room.

That's the scoop. Let me know what you think. :)

Anne and Jon Visit the Schmoodles

The Schmoodles was very honored to spend the 4th of July with Annie and Jonboy. We kicked off the weekend with a trip to the "Taste of Chicago" in Grant Park, although we probably won't repeat that one. Tee hee hee. Sorry guys. We followed that up with a limited view of some spectacular fireworks in downtown Chicago.

The rest of our fun-filled weekend included a trip to downtown Geneva, the Museum of Science and Industry for the Harry Potter Exhibit, and a few games of Race for the Galaxy. The only thing left on the list at this point is a trip to the Particle Accelerator at Fermilab in Batavia, IL. Next time, I promise. Thanks guys for a wonderful visit.

These few pictures are evidence of the precious few moments I was willing to drag myself away from the yarn shopping, pontoon knitting, and all around awesome time with the girls to document all the fun. It was a fantastic weekend complete with personalized drink coozies, drink cups with strobe lights, and chocolate shot glasses filled with milk! Thanks ladies, this trip rocked!

Stacey Visits the Schmoodles

Stacey came to visit the Schmoodles over Memorial Day this year. Although we spent most of the week trying to strongarm Stacey into moving here for good, I still think she managed to have some fun. :) Tee hee hee.

We spent sometime in downtown Geneva, did some shopping on the Miracle Mile and Lincoln Park, and checked out the miniatures at the Art Insititute of Chicago. We had dinner at the Berghoff, our favorite historic German restaurant in downtown Chicago, and took in some local Blues bands at Blue Chicago.

We familiarized ourselves with the city by boat on an architecture tour given by the Chicago Architecture Insititute. We lucked out with the weather, and it was a very cool way to see the city! Chicago Architecture Tour

We also took in the sights on the "Untouchables" Gangster Bus Tour of Chicago. Despite the initial cheese factor there was very interesting, occasionally gory history to be had along the way. Overall we had a blast! Maybe next time we'll manage to convince Stacey that Chicago is "her kind of town". :)
